Lead Data Scientist Full Time

Our client is seeking an experienced Lead Data Scientist to drive the delivery of advanced data science solutions within a production environment. This permanent remote role offers the opportunity to combine hands-on data science expertise with technical leadership, mentoring and senior stakeholder engagement.

Key Responsibilities:
• Lead the development and delivery of production-grade machine learning, statistical modelling and AI solutions.
• Design, deploy, monitor and retrain machine learning models.
• Guide data science delivery and provide technical leadership to team members.
• Mentor and support data scientists in developing their technical capabilities.
• Work with lakehouse architectures, feature stores and training-data versioning.
• Contribute to data warehouse, analytics and visualisation initiatives.
• Communicate technical concepts, project progress and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
• Potentially lead an Agile delivery squad within the Platform organisation.

Requirements:
• 7+ years’ experience across data science, data analytics or data warehousing, with substantial recent data science experience.
• At least 2 years’ experience in a technical or engineering leadership role.
• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline or equivalent professional experience.
• Senior-level expertise in machine learning, statistical modelling and AI system design.
• Advanced Python skills with strong experience in Jupyter Notebooks, pandas, NumPy and scikit-learn.
• Experience with Delta Lake or comparable lakehouse architectures.
• Experience with PySpark, feature stores, training-data versioning and schema evolution.
• Strong data warehouse experience, including Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure SQL, T-SQL and/or ANSI SQL.
• Strong Power BI and Python-based analytics and visualisation experience.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.

Location & Working Model:
• South Africa-based, permanent remote position.
• Occasional travel to Johannesburg or Cape Town, approximately a few times per year.
• Proximity to either Johannesburg or Cape Town is preferred.
• Reports to the Head of Data Science.
