Senior Java Developer Full Time

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to join their team in Cape Town. The ideal candidate will bring strong enterprise Java development experience, with particular exposure to retail Point of Sale solutions, system integrations and large corporate environments.

Key Responsibilities
• Design, prototype and implement new Java software solutions and extensions.
• Develop and maintain Java-based Point of Sale solutions within large retail environments.
• Work with SAP retail solutions and related integration concepts.
• Develop user interfaces using technologies such as Swing, HTML5 and CSS.
• Integrate third-party solutions using SOAP, REST and iDocs.
• Integrate hardware including card terminals, POS printers and fingerprint sensors.
• Develop reporting and line-printing solutions using JasperReports and iText.
• Produce technical documentation and instructions, including UML, Wiki and SDK documentation.
• Collaborate with customers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders at various levels.
• Contribute to projects within complex, matrix-structured corporate environments.
• Identify technical challenges and develop innovative solutions.
• Maintain meticulous project documentation, meeting records and decisions.

Requirements
• 5+ years’ experience developing retail Point of Sale solutions, preferably using Java.
• 5+ years’ experience developing enterprise solutions in Java.
• Strong knowledge of Java, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS and SQL.
• Strong understanding of UI design and software ergonomics.
• Experience with Eclipse, Spring, SVN, JUnit, web services, GWT and CI tools such as Jenkins and Nexus.
• Good SQL knowledge, preferably across Oracle and/or SQL Server.
• Knowledge of SAP technologies and strong SAP integration experience.
• Understanding of the PMLC.
• Strong business acumen and experience working with large corporations in a matrix environment.
• Strong analytical, conceptual, mathematical and fault-finding abilities.
• Ability to engage confidently with customers and subcontractors, including senior and executive stakeholders.
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
• Strong documentation and record-keeping capabilities.
• Good time-management and change-management skills.
• Ability to take initiative and learn new systems and technologies independently.
• Familiarity with tools such as JIRA and Confluence would be advantageous.
• University degree in Information Science, IT or a similar field preferred.
• German language skills would be advantageous.
