OVERHEAD LINES ENGINEER | MIDRAND, GAUTENG Full Time

Our client is seeking an experienced Overhead Lines Engineer to join their Power and Energy team in Midrand. This is an opportunity for a professionally registered engineer to contribute to local and international transmission and distribution projects, designing and assessing overhead line structures across voltage ranges from 33kV to 765kV.

Key Responsibilities
• Design and analyse overhead transmission and distribution line structures, including steel lattice towers and monopoles.
• Perform tower spotting and line profiling using PLS-CADD.
• Conduct structural assessments of existing infrastructure and recommend reinforcement, refurbishment or replacement solutions.
• Carry out structural checks and design validation using PLS-TOWER and PLS-POLE.
• Contribute to hardware design and assembly development.
• Prepare and review detailed designs, drawings, technical reports and project documentation.
• Provide construction support and technical input during project execution.
• Develop structural design tools and criteria files for engineering checks.
• Provide technical and cost-estimation input during tenders and procurement.
• Collaborate with civil, electrical, geotechnical and environmental teams.
• Engage with clients, contractors and relevant regulatory authorities.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.
• Participate in client meetings, technical workshops and design reviews locally and internationally.
• Travel domestically and internationally when required.

Requirements
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Civil or Structural Engineering.
• Pr. Eng or Pr. Tech Eng registration.
• Minimum 10 years’ experience in structural design of transmission line structures.
• Experience within the South African and/or UK power sectors is preferred.
• Highly proficient in PLS-CADD, PLS-TOWER, PLS-POLE and AutoCAD.
• Strong knowledge of transmission line design criteria, including sag and tensions, wind loading and conductor tensioning.
• Knowledge of foundation interaction and performance under varying terrain and environmental conditions.
• Understanding of relevant national and international transmission line standards and codes.
• Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
• Ability to lead, mentor and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
• Willingness to travel as required.

Advantageous Technical Knowledge
• Eskom Grid Codes and TRMSCAAC1.
• SANS 10100 and SANS 10280.
• IEC 60826 and IEC 60652.
• EN 50341 and relevant Eurocodes.
• ASCE, CSA and AS/NZS overhead line standards.
